Reference service is available at the Reference Desk on the first floor whenever Killam Library is open. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, and visitors will receive assistance at the Reference Desk with any kind of research or information need. Reference service is also available by telephone during library hours – call 956-326-2138. Email reference service is available from firstname.lastname@example.org.
Faculty members and leaders of on-campus and off-campus groups may request formal library instruction sessions for their classes or groups. The instruction is always tailored to the instructor or group leader's needs. Instruction may consist of anything from a general library orientation to detailed bibliographic instruction in a specific subject area to demonstration of one or more electronic databases, including the Internet. The details of any library instruction session should be worked out with the reference librarian who will provide the instruction. Reference librarians are also available to assist in the creation of any class library assignment. To arrange an instruction session or consult about an assignment, please call John Maxstadt at 956-326-2116 or email email@example.com.
Course-integrated library instruction is currently featured in TAMIU’s Freshman Seminar course, UNIV 1101-1102. A unit of library and information literacy skills is taught to each section by library faculty, and graded assignments attached to that unit comprise 10% of the course grade. Faculty interested in developing course-integrated library and information literacy instruction in other courses and programs should contact John Maxstadt, as above.
